Traditional Medicine Pauwau: A Gathering in the Spirit of the Elders in Algonquin Tradition called by the Pauwau The Person The Event The Purpose The Person: A Pauwau is a person with primary responsibility for the health of the villagers and the village on all levels. To maintain the mental, emotional, physical and spiritual health of the entire village, up until the European influx, the Pauwau called the village together for approximately ten days several times a year. Now, the time is likely to be much shorter and less frequently. The days are spent in discussion, including story telling, on anything and everything that may affect the health of the village, and the evenings are spent feasting, drumming and dancing.The Gathering in the Spirit of the Elders initiated by the Pauwau in the Algonquin Tradition is itself called a Pauwau.
Modern gatherings, also known as powwows, are modeled on this traditional village gathering, facilitated by the Pauwau, to promote individual and community healing. The Event: A Gathering in the Spirit of the Elders initiated by the Pauwau in the Algonquin Tradition is itself called a Pauwau. ... a participatory gathering of like minded people focusing on indigenous traditional practices for living together in harmony, cooperation, and mutual sovereignty, respecting self, each other, and Mother Earth, sharing our gifts with our neighbors and in the bounty of Earth. There is ceremony, demonstrations, drumming and dancing, food, items for purchase, singing, story telling, visiting four leggeds and/or winged ones, etc. Admission is by free will donation, supporting the host organization. All are welcome. No one turned away. The Purpose: To promote harmonious living and the health of the community, individually and collectively. To apply various means of maintaining peaceful and healthy conditions, including healing. The Medicine Pauwau deals with the entire spectrum of balance and healing.
